'Posing for cameras': Israel mocks flotilla activists online as torture, rape allegations mount
Foreign Ministry claims injuries staged as France bans security minister

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has launched a digital campaign ridiculing activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, alleging that injuries sustained during detention were staged for media attention. The ministry specifically highlighted an activist pictured wearing a neck brace, noting a “marvellous recovery” upon their return home without the device, implying the injury was fabricated for cameras.

This online mockery follows a series of serious accusations from activists who claim they were subjected to torture, sexual violence, and rape while in Israeli custody. Despite the gravity of these claims, the Israeli government has not engaged directly with the specifics of the abuse allegations. An Israeli prison spokesperson told Reuters that the allegations are “false and entirely without factual basis.”

The controversy has intensified diplomatic friction, particularly after far-right Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video taunting detained activists. The footage showed Ben-Gvir waving an Israeli flag over participants lying on the ground with their hands bound by zip-ties. The video triggered immediate backlash from countries whose citizens were aboard the flotilla, leading France to ban Ben-Gvir from entering the country.

In response to international criticism, the Israeli Foreign Ministry also attempted to highlight what it described as hypocrisy from Spain. The ministry reposted a video of clashes at Bilbao airport, demanding an explanation from Madrid regarding its treatment of “flotilla anarchists.” Spanish state broadcaster TVE reported that the scuffles began when a relative of one of the six activists attempted to approach them and was forcefully stopped by police.

The Global Sumud Flotilla has pushed back against the Israeli government’s narrative. Activist Nesrin Zeaiter stated she experienced a concussion and over 40 bruises in custody, asserting that a neck brace is “standard precautionary protocol for suspected cervical injury.” The flotilla and the treatment of its members have remained at the centre of a media storm since the incident last week.
