Gaza flotilla activists deported from Israel as backlash over treatment grows
International backlash mounts as UK, Poland, and Italy demand accountability for treatment of Global Sumud Flotilla detainees

Israel has confirmed the deportation of hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists detained following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a move that has triggered significant diplomatic friction across Europe and beyond. The deportations follow the circulation of a video showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir taunting detainees with their hands bound, prompting swift condemnation from multiple foreign ministries and demands for accountability regarding the treatment of the activists.

The United Kingdom Foreign Office summoned charge d’affaires Daniela Grudsky Ekstein to express strong condemnation of Ben Gvir’s conduct and to demand an explanation regarding the detention conditions depicted in the footage. The UK stated it was deeply concerned by the treatment of those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla and emphasised Israel’s obligations to protect the rights of all detainees. Similarly, Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed outrage and requested an apology for the behaviour of an Israeli government minister, with a formal request made to ban Ben Gvir from entering Poland.

Italy has escalated the diplomatic response by asking the European Union to consider sanctions against Ben Gvir. Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani cited the seizure of activists in international waters and their subsequent harassment as unacceptable acts that violated basic human rights. Italian participants Dario Carotenuto and Alessandro Mantovani arrived in Rome after being flown via Athens, with Carotenuto alleging they had been beaten upon arrival in Israel.

The incident originated on Monday morning when armed Israeli naval commandos intercepted the flotilla, comprising over 50 boats and 430 people from more than 40 countries, approximately 250 nautical miles west of Cyprus. Israel dismissed the mission as a public relations stunt for Hamas, while the government maintained that the naval blockade on Gaza remains lawful and that no breaches would be permitted. Despite the interception, the Israeli embassy in London stated that the video did not represent government policy and had been condemned by senior figures including President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideo Sa’ar.

Reports from Adalah, an Israel-based rights group, indicated severe and widespread injuries among the detainees, with at least three individuals taken to hospital. Israeli authorities have not commented on these allegations. Meanwhile, repatriation efforts are underway, with Turkey conducting special flights for its citizens and third-country participants. Ireland confirmed that 15 of its citizens, including Dr Margaret Connolly, were expected to be flown to Turkey, while Spain announced the departure of approximately 44 Spanish members.

Criticism of the Israeli government’s response extended to domestic political figures, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that Ben Gvir’s actions were not in line with Israel’s values. However, families of detained British citizens, such as Clare Azzougarh, described the arrests as an escalation of extreme violence and criticised the UK government’s response as hollow without concrete diplomatic actions. The incident has drawn condemnation from a broad coalition of nations, including the US, France, Greece, the Netherlands, and Canada, highlighting the growing international scrutiny of Israel’s handling of the flotilla incident.
