Israel claims killing of new Hamas military leader in Gaza
The Israeli Defence Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that airstrikes in Gaza City killed Mohammed Odeh, the newly appointed head of Hamas’ military wing. The operation marks the fourth time Israel has eliminated the group’s military chief since the conflict began.

Israel’s Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday that Mohammed Odeh, the new leader of Hamas’ military wing, was killed during airstrikes in Gaza City on Tuesday. Defence Minister Israel Katz described Odeh as one of the architects of the October 7, 2023, attacks that triggered the ongoing war. The announcement came less than two weeks after the killing of Odeh’s predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, on May 16.
Katz stated on X that the strike was part of a broader pledge to eliminate all leaders involved in the October 7 massacre. He reiterated that Hamas would not hold civilian or military rule, adding that those responsible were bound to die. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is preparing for autumn elections, also threatened that Israel would target everyone involved in the initial attacks.
Local hospitals reported that the Tuesday strike resulted in at least five deaths and 12 injuries. The attack occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday, which has been subdued in Gaza due to the ongoing conflict. The vast majority of Gaza’s population remains displaced, with many living in tent camps and dependent on aid.
Family members of a man named Mohammed Odeh confirmed that he was killed in the strike but did not verify his role as the military wing leader. Hamas has not commented on the killing. The Israeli military confirmed the targeting of Odeh, aligning with the Defence Ministry’s statement.
The killing of Odeh adds to the casualties since the ceasefire reached between Israel and Hamas in October. Israeli attacks have killed more than 880 Palestinians since the truce took effect, while Palestinian health officials report that scores of civilians are among the dead. Four Israeli soldiers have also been killed during this period. The Palestinian health ministry states that over 72,803 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the conflict began.
