Iran summons Ukraine diplomats over Caspian Sea attack

Iran has formally summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires to Tehran following a deadly attack in the Caspian Sea, accusing Kyiv of launching a hostile strike on Iranian assets. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident as a “hostile and criminal” act and a violation of the UN Charter, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic rhetoric between the two nations.
Tehran stated that the Ukrainian attack resulted in the death of at least one sailor and injured another. While the specific identity of the warship targeted by Ukraine has not been confirmed in available reporting, the Iranian government has cited the loss of life on what it described as a commercial vessel as evidence of the severity of the breach.
In response to the allegations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed via X that Kyiv had conducted long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. Zelenskyy stated that the operations achieved “very strong results” and targeted vessels used for military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship. However, he did not explicitly identify the commercial ship named by Tehran as a target, leaving a gap in the narrative alignment between the two parties.
