Iran launches missiles at Israel, complicating US-Iran mediation efforts
Tehran’s retaliatory strike follows Israeli attacks on Beirut, prompting warnings from Iran and renewed diplomatic activity led by Pakistan.

Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel on Sunday night, marking the first direct bombardment between the two nations since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April. The attack was a direct retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier that day, which resulted in two deaths and 20 injuries. The incident has immediately complicated ongoing mediation efforts aimed at ending the wider conflict between the United States and Iran.
Israel’s military confirmed it intercepted all incoming missiles, though sirens sounded in several areas and multiple explosions were heard in the north. The Israel Defence Forces warned that “the defense is not hermetic,” despite reporting no immediate casualties or damage. Iran’s state broadcaster, citing the armed forces, stated that attacks would continue if Israel does not stop its operations in Lebanon or responds to Iranian strikes.
The escalation occurred amidst intense diplomatic activity. Pakistan’s interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, was delivering a message to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei from Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. Concurrently, the foreign ministers of Egypt and Qatar discussed “proposed elements” of a potential agreement between the US and Iran, with no further details provided.
Tehran has insisted that any comprehensive deal must include an end to the fighting in Lebanon. This stance contrasts with US President Donald Trump’s recent comments, where he indicated a preference for “more surgical” attacks on Hezbollah and stated he was not demanding that Lebanon be part of an overall ceasefire deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated he intends to press ahead with the offensive until he believes Hezbollah no longer poses a threat.
Meanwhile, US Central Command posted that forces across the Middle East remain vigilant. The White House did not immediately respond to messages regarding the missile launches. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, with Iran asserting its grip on the waterway while the US continues a blockade of Iranian ports, affecting shipments of oil, natural gas, and fertilizer.
