Iran and Israel escalate tensions, threatening fragile Middle East truces
Tehran accuses Washington of breaching a ceasefire, while Israeli bombardment in south Lebanon kills 31, including children, and targets Hamas leadership in Gaza.

Tehran has formally accused Washington of breaching a ceasefire following overnight United States strikes, warning that Iran is prepared to retaliate. The diplomatic friction coincides with intensified Israeli military operations across the region, casting doubt on the stability of existing truces in Lebanon and Gaza.
In south Lebanon, Israeli bombardment killed at least 31 people, including four children, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The strikes targeted multiple locations, including the Bekaa Valley village of Mashghara, where 11 bodies were recovered and 15 others were injured. These attacks threaten a fragile truce established on 17 April, which has failed to halt hostilities that began when Hezbollah launched attacks in early March.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement regarding operations in Gaza City late Tuesday. The strikes, which occurred on the eve of Eid al-Adha, killed at least three people and injured 12. Officials identified the target as Mohammed Odeh, the new leader of Hamas’ military wing, describing him as an architect of the 7 October 2023 attacks. This operation follows the killing of the previous Hamas military leader, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, less than two weeks prior.
Diplomatic pressures are mounting as Iran demands that any future peace accord include provisions for Lebanon. Despite the April ceasefire, fighting has persisted, with the Lebanese health ministry attributing at least 3,185 deaths to Israeli strikes since the broader conflict began on 3 March. On the Israeli side, the military confirmed 23 soldier deaths in combat in southern Lebanon as of Sunday.
Israeli forces are expanding their ground operations deeper into Lebanon, with an Israeli military official confirming the escalation to AFP. Meanwhile, sirens sounded in several northern areas of Israel after a projectile launched from Lebanon landed in an open area, resulting in no injuries. The convergence of US strikes on Iran and intensified Israeli actions suggests a significant deterioration in regional security.
