IPL 2026 playoffs structure: How the knockout phase determines the champion
The 2026 edition enters its business end with the top four teams advancing to a four-match playoff sequence that rewards league-stage consistency.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has reached the conclusion of its league phase, with the top four teams advancing to the knockout stage based on points and net run rate. The tournament’s playoff structure, which differs from conventional semi-final formats, grants teams finishing in the top two positions a distinct strategic advantage by offering a second opportunity to reach the final.
The playoffs comprise four matches: Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. Qualifier 1 is contested between the first and second-ranked teams. The winner of this match advances directly to the IPL 2026 Final, while the loser is not eliminated but instead proceeds to Qualifier 2. This mechanism ensures that consistent performance during the league stage is heavily rewarded, as top-two finishers can afford one defeat in the knockout phase.
The Eliminator is played between the third and fourth-ranked teams from the league phase. Unlike the top two, teams in this match face immediate elimination if they lose. The victor of the Eliminator advances to Qualifier 2, setting up a high-stakes encounter against the loser of Qualifier 1.
Qualifier 2 serves as the penultimate stage of the tournament. It features the loser of Qualifier 1 against the winner of the Eliminator. The victor of this match secures their place in the IPL 2026 Final, while the defeated team is eliminated from contention for the championship title.
This specific playoff format was introduced in 2011 and remains in use for the 2026 season. The system is designed to favour teams that perform well throughout the league stage, providing a buffer for top-ranked sides that might otherwise be eliminated in a standard single-elimination tournament.
