IPL 2026 playoff picture narrows as Gujarat Titans and RCB secure near-certainty

Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore have effectively secured their places in the 2026 Indian Premier League playoffs, with qualification probabilities standing at 99.7 per cent and 99 per cent respectively. According to a comprehensive analysis of the remaining 13 league-stage fixtures, the field for the top four has narrowed significantly, leaving other franchises with diminishing returns.
The statistical projections, derived from 8,192 possible combinations of match outcomes, reveal a stark divide in the tournament standings. Gujarat Titans hold an 82.6 per cent probability of finishing in the top two positions, either singly or jointly. Royal Challengers Bangalore follow with a 77.6 per cent chance of securing a top-two finish. These figures suggest that the race for the higher seeds is effectively a two-horse contest, with other teams facing steep mathematical hurdles.
Conversely, the situation for Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals has deteriorated sharply. Following recent results, Kolkata Knight Riders’ qualification chances have plummeted to 2.6 per cent, a figure that precludes them from tying for a top-two slot. Delhi Capitals face a similar fate, with a 2.7 per cent probability of reaching the playoffs. Their scenario is particularly constrained; they can at best finish third in a multi-team tie, a condition that occurs in only 220 of the 8,192 possible outcome combinations.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings remain well-placed in the race for the final playoff spots. Sunrisers Hyderabad hold a 77 per cent chance of finishing in the top four, though their odds of reaching the top two stand at 31.4 per cent. Punjab Kings are similarly positioned with a 63.6 per cent probability of making the top four and a 22.2 per cent chance of reaching the top two.
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals sit on the cusp of qualification, both holding better-than-even odds of reaching the top four at 53.2 per cent and 53 per cent respectively. However, their prospects of securing a top-two finish are slim, at 19 per cent and 15.3 per cent. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians have been mathematically eliminated from contention, leaving the remaining teams to battle for the final spots in the knockout stages.
