Iowa women's basketball taps into Sweden for latest commitment
Program expands international footprint as head coach Jan Jensen confirms 11-player squad is complete

The University of Iowa women’s basketball program has secured a verbal commitment from 19-year-old forward Ella Stromdahl, marking the first signing from Sweden for the Hawkeyes. Stromdahl, a native of Uppsala, joins Californian McKenna Woliczko as the second member of the incoming freshman class for the 2026-27 season.

Assistant coach LaSondra Barrett, who expressed a desire to expand the program’s international recruiting efforts in late January, led the recruitment of Stromdahl. The 6-foot forward visited the University of Iowa on May 12 and brings experience from playing for Sweden’s under-16 and under-18 national teams. During the previous season, she played for the RIG Lulea Swedish academy team, averaging 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Head coach Jan Jensen indicated that the roster is now complete with 11 players for the upcoming season. Stromdahl is the fifth offseason addition for Iowa, joining transfers Dani Carnegie, Jocelyn Faison, Amari Whiting, and Bria Medina. Jensen stated on May 11 that she is satisfied with an 11-player roster and plans no further recruiting activity for the 2026-27 cycle.

The acquisition aligns with Jensen’s tactical shift back to a “four-out” offensive scheme, which utilises four perimeter players to stretch the floor. Stromdahl’s inside-outside skill set, including her ability to shoot from three-point range, fits this system. Jensen discussed this strategic adjustment during her stop at the Carroll Area I-Club, noting the roster’s readiness for the season ahead.

Stromdahl’s commitment follows a visit by Medina, who also committed to the Hawkeyes during the same trip. The Des Moines Register, where columnist Chad Leistikow reported the development, confirmed the signing through a source with direct knowledge of the decision. The Hawkeyes now have a full roster heading into the 2026-27 season.
