Quantum computing firm reports 755 per cent revenue jump and beats earnings estimates

IonQ Inc reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $64.7 million, marking a 755 per cent increase from the $7.6 million recorded in the previous quarter. This result represents the company’s third consecutive quarter of record-breaking revenue growth, signalling accelerating commercial traction in the quantum computing sector.

On a GAAP basis, the company posted earnings per share of $2.59, significantly outperforming analyst consensus estimates which had predicted a loss of $0.48 per share. The positive variance highlights the rapid scaling of IonQ’s revenue streams relative to its cost base during the period.

However, adjusted metrics reflected a different picture, with an EPS deficit of $0.34. This figure was driven by substantial research and development expenditures, including $11.8 million linked to a commercial collaboration with SkyWater Technology. IonQ noted that this partnership is expected to continue until a planned acquisition is completed in 2026.

The adjusted EBITDA loss for the quarter stood at $96.8 million, encompassing the aforementioned R&D costs. Despite the deficit, the company’s financial performance demonstrates a clear trajectory of expanding top-line growth, supported by its infrastructure available through cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure Quantum and AWS.

In a significant technological development, IonQ announced the creation of the world’s first large-scale quantum algorithm utilising actual S&P 500 data. The firm stated that this tool is designed to improve portfolio integrity and execution rates in production scenarios, distinguishing its capabilities from previous theoretical models by applying them to real-world financial benchmarks.

The results underscore the intensifying competition and investment in quantum infrastructure, as firms like IonQ seek to demonstrate practical utility in complex financial modelling alongside hardware advancements.
