IonQ accuracy edge weighs against Rigetti’s speed in quantum comparison
A Motley Fool analysis favours IonQ’s trapped-ion technology but classifies both quantum computing stocks as high-risk investments.
IonQ has a reported accuracy advantage over Rigetti Computing, while Rigetti’s superconducting systems offer greater processing speed, according to an analysis published by The Motley Fool.
IonQ uses lasers and trapped ions, while Rigetti operates superconducting systems at near-absolute-zero temperatures. The analysis cites two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.99% for IonQ’s 256-qubit system, compared with 99.1% for Rigetti’s 108-qubit system. The figures are presented without testing dates, methodology or independent verification.
The comparison also highlights a significant difference in reported revenue. IonQ recognised US$80.1 million in second-quarter revenue, although some of that total came from acquired business. Rigetti reported US$5.1 million, up from US$1.8 million a year earlier. IonQ expects organic revenue growth of more than 100% this year, a company forecast rather than an established result.
IonQ reported more than US$2 billion in cash and short-term investments, while Rigetti held more than US$500 million. The analysis says both companies remain unprofitable, reliant on external support and at an early commercial stage.
The Motley Fool’s analysis backs the larger IonQ, but describes both stocks as long-shot, high-risk investments. It says IonQ has a better chance of succeeding, while acknowledging that either company could ultimately fail.
