Liberty's Ionescu to make season debut vs. Wings
Guard returns to WNBA action against Dallas Wings following preseason setback

New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu is set to make her season debut on Sunday when the team faces the Dallas Wings, confirming her availability to reporters following practice on Saturday. The return marks the end of a sideline absence that began on 4 May, when Ionescu sustained a left ankle injury during a preseason match against the Golden State Valkyries.

An MRI scan conducted after the injury revealed no major structural damage to the foot or ankle, although Ionescu acknowledged the presence of some structural issues that required treatment. The guard described the injury as significant despite the lack of major damage, noting that while she could put weight on the foot, the sensation indicated a notable setback. She stated that the injury responded quickly to treatment and will not require future surgery.

During her recovery period, Ionescu utilised an underwater treadmill and other cardio exercises to maintain her physical conditioning. She expressed confidence that her fitness levels have not deteriorated significantly, although she described her status as day-to-day. The guard admitted she is still working to feel completely good as the injury continues to heal, but she is committed to playing in the upcoming fixture.

The Liberty have started the season with a 3-2 record through their first five games under new head coach Chris DeMarco. Ionescu, who averaged 18.2 points, 5.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 38 games last season, has been a key contributor for the franchise. Her return adds depth to a roster that has shown early promise under the new coaching structure.

While Ionescu is cleared for Sunday’s game, her availability for Monday’s match against the Portland Fire remains uncertain due to the back-to-back schedule. The Liberty will manage her workload carefully as they navigate the early stages of the WNBA season, balancing the need for their star guard with the physical demands of consecutive games.
