Instagram now lets you swap out the music in your old posts
Meta-owned platform allows creators to swap soundtracks without losing engagement metrics

Instagram has launched a new 'Replace Audio' feature, allowing users to swap the music in published feed posts and carousels without deleting and re-uploading the content. The update enables creators to change soundtracks while retaining existing engagement metrics, including likes, comments, shares, and reach. The feature is accessed via the post's edit menu.

The Meta-owned company announced the tool on Tuesday, marking a shift in how creators manage their content libraries. Previously, users could only change music by deleting and re-uploading the post, a process that reset all engagement data. This new capability removes the friction that previously forced creators and brands to choose between keeping a post’s historical engagement or updating its soundtrack.

Instagram states the feature is part of its broader efforts to give creators more creative control over their content. The update allows users to align their posts with current trends or refresh older content to reflect evolving music tastes. This functionality is particularly relevant for brands and influencers who rely on consistent audience interaction metrics to demonstrate value to advertisers and partners.

The introduction of the tool follows a period of significant user backlash for the social media giant. Last week, the company removed a feature that allowed users to modify photos from public accounts using AI, stating it "missed the mark". In May, Instagram released "Instants", a feature for sharing real-life moments, which faced user frustration due to accidental sharing of images to friends lists.

To use the new audio replacement tool, users must navigate to the specific post, tap the two-line menu in the top-right corner, select 'Edit', and then choose the option to swap out the audio. This straightforward access point aims to integrate the feature seamlessly into existing workflows, potentially restoring some user trust after recent controversial product decisions.
