Indian Education Minister Resigns After 36-Day Youth-Led Protest Campaign

Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following 36 days of nationwide protests orchestrated by the satirical 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP). The movement emerged from public outrage over exam paper leaks that contributed to student suicides, compounded by remarks from India’s chief justice describing youth as “cockroaches” and “parasites.” The CJP, a parody of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, successfully pressured the government to meet key demands, including compensation for victims’ families, immunity for demonstrators, and a police apology for violent crackdowns. Protest leader Abhijeet Dipke declared the resignation a victory for the youth-led campaign.
The protests began 36 days ago after a social media post by Abhijeet Dipke asking, “What if all cockroaches came together?” sparking the formation of the Cockroach Janta Party. Demonstrations began early on, driven by anger over exam paper leaks and the chief justice’s comments likening youth to parasites. The resignation marks a significant political victory for the youth-led movement, which also secured demands for compensation for victims' families, immunity for protesters, and a police apology for crackdowns.
A crackdown on July 20, where more than 100 protesters were wounded during a march to Parliament, fuelled nationwide anger and prompted tens of thousands to join demonstrations in cities including Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Patna. Video evidence of police using tear gas, batons, and canes against demonstrators was cited as a key factor in escalating the protests. The internet was blocked at the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi during the announcement of the minister’s resignation.
Protest leader Abhijeet Dipke announced the victory to thousands of supporters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, dedicating the win to students who had taken their own lives due to exam-related stress. The government accepted the protesters’ demands, which included compensation for families of students who died by suicide, assurances of no punitive action for demonstrators, and a public apology from police and paramilitary forces for crackdowns. The CJP official handle on X posted a reply to Dipke’s original post, stating, “And today, friends, we found out what happens [when the cockroaches assemble].”
