India secure series victory under Iyer with dominant Zimbabwe win

India have secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe following a 90-run victory in the second match at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday. The win marks the nation’s first series success under the leadership of new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, concluding a tour that followed a disappointing white-ball campaign in the United Kingdom.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 219 for five in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a blistering partnership between Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma. Kishan scored 81 off 44 balls, while Varma remained unbeaten on 60 off 29 deliveries. The pair shared a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket in just 44 balls, with 77 of those runs coming in the middle overs, allowing India to surge from 111 for three to 188 for three by the end of the 17th over.

Prior to the collapse of the opening pair, captain Shreyas Iyer contributed 25 off 20 balls before being caught at backward point by Brad Evans off the bowling of Brian Bennett. The early loss of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek for 29 runs set the stage for Kishan and Iyer to rebuild the innings before the explosive middle-order partnership took control.

In response, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 129 in 17.5 overs. Yash Thakur made an impressive T20I debut, replacing Ashok Sharma, and claimed figures of 2 for 30, including the crucial wicket of top scorer Brian Bennett, who made 32 off 19 balls. Prince Yadav took 2 for 10 before limping off the field after bowling just 1.2 overs, while part-time spinner Abhishek Sharma cleaned up the tail with 3 for 17.

The victory equalled India’s own record for the most 200-plus totals in a calendar year, marking their ninth such score in 2026 and matching the tally set in 2024. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza conceded 47 runs off his 15-over spell without taking a wicket. The series concludes with the third and final T20I scheduled for today.
