India have secured their first victory in captain Shreyas Iyer’s eighth match in charge, defeating Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the opening T20I at the Harare Sports Club on 24 July 2026. The win concludes a difficult start to Iyer’s tenure, which had seen him lose six of his first seven games during tours of Ireland and England, and marks India’s first series-opening win since lifting the 2026 T20 World Cup in March.
The match was defined by a blistering performance from 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored his maiden international half-century. Sooryavanshi reached fifty runs off just 18 balls, including four sixes and four fours, in an innings that effectively settled the contest before the 14th over. The teenager, who had struggled for runs in his previous three international appearances against England, returned to the venue of his record-breaking 175 in the 2026 U-19 World Cup final to produce a display of aggressive batting.
Zimbabwe had been restricted to 125 for seven by an Indian pace attack that exploited the conditions effectively. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav shared four wickets for 37 runs in eight overs. Mayank Yadav made an immediate impact by dismissing opener Brian Bennett with the first ball of the match, a 150 kmph delivery that required a successful review to overturn the initial not-out decision. He added another wicket by removing Dion Myers, while Prince Yadav dismissed debutant Ben Curran to leave the hosts struggling at 20 for three.
Sooryavanshi’s assault began in earnest in the second over, where he scored 19 runs off left-arm pacer Richard Ngarava, including two sixes. Although he was dismissed in the seventh over by Ngarava, top-edging a wide delivery to Ben Curran at deep third, India had already raced to 68 for one. Ishan Kishan provided support with 35 runs, helping the visitors complete the chase in 13.2 overs with 40 balls to spare.
Zimbabwe’s highest score came from Madhevere with 39 runs, but the team could not build sufficient momentum against the disciplined Indian bowling. Captain Sikandar Raza was dismissed for four runs, pulled to substitute fielder Suryansh Shedge, as the hosts slipped to 32 for four. Blessing Muzarabani took 2-26 for Zimbabwe, but it was insufficient to prevent a comprehensive defeat that shifts the momentum in the three-match series.
