Hyogo authorities warn of bear activity as traps deployed in Kobe
The Japan Meteorological Agency and local governments manage overlapping public safety concerns as bear sightings in Hyogo Prefecture coincide with broader weather alerts.

Police and municipal authorities in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, have issued urgent warnings to residents following two separate reports of bear sightings near a residential area late on June 12. The incidents have prompted local law enforcement and city administration to advise the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution in the vicinity.
Concurrent activity has been recorded in neighbouring Kobe City, where authorities confirmed the presence of a bear in a forested area of Kita Ward on June 11. In response to this confirmation, officials installed traps in the same wooded location on June 13 to manage the potential risk to public safety.
The bear identified in Kobe has been preliminarily classified as an adult Asiatic black bear, known locally as the Tsukinowaguma. While the proximity of the sightings in Nishinomiya and Kobe suggests a possible connection, authorities have not explicitly confirmed whether the reports involve the same individual or multiple animals.
The timing of these wildlife incidents occurs against a backdrop of broader environmental monitoring in the region. Earlier in June, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued severe weather warnings, including linear rainband predictions for Tokushima and flood alerts for Tokyo, highlighting the complex nature of public safety management in the area.
Residents in both Nishinomiya and Kobe are advised to heed official guidance as municipal teams continue to monitor the situation and implement containment measures in affected forested and residential zones.
