Huskies recruit McClendon to shore up interior defensive line

Washington Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch has signed Mississippi State defensive tackle Kai McClendon from the transfer portal, marking one of the program’s earliest additions for the 2026 season. The move is designed to bolster an interior defensive line that recorded only eight combined sacks from true interior linemen in the previous campaign.

McClendon, a 6-foot-1, 334-pound player from Gulfport, Mississippi, is currently recovering from a knee injury sustained in the spring of 2025, which caused him to miss the entire 2025 season. He transferred from Mississippi State to Washington in January 2026 and is employing intensive recovery methods, including daily hot saunas, to prepare for fall camp in August.

The Huskies’ coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Ryan Walters and position coach Jason Kaufusi, view McClendon as a critical addition. With only redshirt junior Elinneus Davis returning alongside McClendon for Kaufusi, the staff is looking for a significant upgrade to a front five that struggled to generate pressure last season.

McClendon’s collegiate career began with a productive true freshman season at Mississippi State in 2024. He recorded 30 total tackles, tied for 11th on the team, and started the final five games of the season. His development was noted by then-Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby, who praised McClendon’s transition from a high school standout to a key contributor in the college ranks.

Washington head coach Jedd Fisch expressed confidence in the potential impact of McClendon’s return. Speaking after the team’s spring game in early May, Fisch indicated that the presence of McClendon, along with returning players such as senior linebacker Taariq Al-Uqdah and offensive linemen Geirean and Landen Hatchett, would be a defining factor in determining the team’s overall quality for the upcoming season.
