Carolina routs Montreal 4-0; Frederik Andersen records 18 saves as Canadiens struggle offensively

The Carolina Hurricanes secured a commanding 3-1 series lead in the NHL Eastern Conference Final after defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in Game 4. The victory positions Carolina one win away from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, with Game 5 scheduled for Friday.

Carolina’s offensive line proved decisive, with Sebastian Aho opening the scoring to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Jordan Staal extended the advantage by redirecting a pass from K’Andre Miller past Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes, and Logan Stankoven added a third goal to establish a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. Frederik Andersen recorded 18 saves for the Hurricanes, maintaining a shutout through the final two periods.

Montreal was significantly outshot 43-18 and failed to capitalise on two power-play opportunities, finishing 0-for-2 on the man advantage. The Canadiens had previously relied on goaltending and overtime victories in Games 2 and 3, but they were unable to generate sustained offensive pressure in this contest. Montreal registered only three shots on goal in the third period and failed to score on any of their power-play chances.

The result marks the first time Montreal has lost three consecutive playoff games this spring. The Canadiens are now 0-3 in Game 4 of the playoffs this postseason. Despite a strong regular-season record of 48-24-10, Montreal has struggled to match Carolina’s intensity, with head coach Martin St. Louis attempting to restructure the forward lines in a bid to stop the slide.

Carolina, who finished the regular season with a 53-22-7 record, has now surpassed the combined one win they earned in their previous two Conference Final appearances. The Hurricanes will look to close out the series on the road, where Montreal holds a 7-3 record this postseason, including two losses in overtime.
