Hurricanes edge closer to Stanley Cup with Game 5 victory over Golden Knights
The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, taking a 3-2 series lead and positioning themselves to win their first championship since 2006.

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, securing a 3-2 series lead and placing them one victory away from their first championship since 2006. Despite an early power-play goal from Vegas, Carolina responded with four unanswered goals, driven by key performances from Jordan Staal, who tied a series record with a goal in five consecutive Final games, and Andrei Svechnikov, who scored twice. Vegas forward William Karlsson exited the match with an apparent upper-body injury, and the Golden Knights failed to capitalise on their chances, leaving them facing elimination in Game 6.
Goaltender Brandon Bussi made 22 saves for Carolina, stabilising the team after previous struggles. The victory marks a significant milestone for the Hurricanes, who have not suffered consecutive losses since mid-January. It is the first time the team has been within one win of the Stanley Cup since coach Rod Brind'Amour captained the franchise to the title in 2006. Bussi secured the win in his second career postseason start, making critical stops in the third period to maintain the lead.
Jordan Staal scored a game-tying goal in the first period, matching a feat last achieved in 1956 (scoring in the first five games of a Cup Final) and tying the series record with a goal in five consecutive Final games. Andrei Svechnikov scored two goals, including one on the powerplay, bringing his total to two goals in the series. Sebastian Aho scored his second goal of the postseason, contributing to a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
Vegas forward William Karlsson left the game in the second period with an apparent left arm injury and did not return. Vegas forward Pavel Dorofeyev scored two goals (one credited as an own goal setup by him) to keep the Golden Knights in contention, finishing with 12 goals and 16 points in the playoffs. The Golden Knights were outshot in the first period 8-5, marking the first time in the series they held a shot advantage in the opening frame.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour’s decision to swap Jordan Martinook for Seth Jarvis on the top line has had a positive impact on Carolina’s offence. The Hurricanes looked more convincing with each passing period, while Vegas increasingly deflated. Game 6 is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, with the Hurricanes facing elimination if they lose.
