Hull City secure Premier League promotion after late victory over Middlesbrough
Oli McBurnie’s 95th-minute strike seals Hull’s return to the top flight, ending a period of instability and avoiding further controversy following Southampton’s disqualification.

Hull City have secured promotion to the English Premier League after defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium. The victory, confirmed by a stoppage-time goal from Oli McBurnie, concludes the tournament and resolves the immediate fallout from the "spy-gate" scandal that threatened the integrity of the competition.
The decisive moment arrived in the 95th minute when McBurnie capitalised on a fumble by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn to score the winning goal. The match, played under high temperatures, was drifting towards extra time before the late intervention. The result ensures Hull’s return to the top flight for the first time since their relegation in 2017, ending a period of significant instability that saw the club compete in the third division during the 2020-21 season.
The final was originally scheduled to feature Southampton, who were disqualified from the playoffs after being found guilty of spying on Middlesbrough’s training sessions ahead of their semi-final clash. The English Football League (EFL) confirmed that Southampton admitted to multiple breaches of regulations regarding the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training. As a result, the club was docked four points for the following season.
Middlesbrough was reinstated in the final following Southampton’s expulsion. Hull City had reportedly considered the match unfair to play, believing the game should have been awarded to them automatically rather than Middlesbrough being reinstated. However, the club proceeded with the match, which averted further controversy over Middlesbrough’s participation.
Promotion to the Premier League provides Hull City with access to approximately 200 million pounds ($268 million) in revenue associated with the top flight. The financial reward is widely regarded as the most lucrative outcome in world football, securing the club’s financial stability and status in the English football hierarchy.
