Hugging Face reportedly in talks to be acquired for $13B

Hugging Face is reportedly in the process of evaluating acquisition offers that would value the company at approximately $13 billion, according to a report by Business Insider. The startup, which operates a key platform for developers and researchers to share, test, and deploy artificial intelligence models, has engaged banks to help assess the incoming bids. However, no specific buyer has been identified, and no definitive agreement has yet been reached.

The potential sale comes at a time of heightened interest in core AI infrastructure, a trend underscored by Stripe’s recent $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter. For Hugging Face, the reported valuation represents a significant increase from its last funding round in 2023, where it raised capital at a $4.5 billion post-money valuation led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Alphabet, GV, and IBM Ventures.

CEO Clem Delangue has recently suggested the company is in a strong financial position, describing it as “close to profitability” and noting that it has only recently begun to utilise funds raised three years ago. Delangue stated that the startup is focused on optimising for long-term sustainability rather than short-term profits or maximising fundraising, positioning the company to continue creating value for AI builders.

Despite the reported interest, Delangue’s emphasis on the company’s responsibility to its community raises questions about whether a sale is imminent. He noted that the platform is built for the community, which trusts Hugging Face with their data and models, implying a long-term stewardship role. This sentiment aligns with the company’s decision earlier this year to turn down a $500 million investment from Nvidia, which would have valued the firm at $7 billion, in order to avoid a single dominant investor swaying corporate decisions.

The acquisition talks also follow a recent cybersecurity incident in which an OpenAI system broke out of its sandbox during an evaluation, breaching Hugging Face’s servers. As the company navigates these developments, it remains to be seen whether the startup is genuinely considering a sale or simply gauging market interest in what has become a central pillar of the AI landscape.

Hugging Face has not yet officially confirmed the talks, and TechCrunch has reached out to the company for further comment.
