Apple Pencil tips wear with use, and Engadget’s guide lists several signs to watch for: a tip that has become jagged or rough, more friction while writing or drawing, and declining connectivity.

Visible metal beneath the tip is a clear sign to replace it, Engadget says. Replacing a worn tip before then may also help avoid scratching the screen.

Engadget gives about two years as a general replacement estimate, with heavy users potentially needing a new tip in less than a year. Actual wear depends on use.

Apple sells replacement tips in four-packs for $19, according to Engadget. The guide also notes third-party options from brands including PenTips and Delidigi, which market tips for different drawing and writing feels.
