LaMelo Ball trade rumors: Hornets fielding 'aggressive offers' as deal could materialize quickly
Charlotte franchise considers moving star guard to secure salary cap flexibility and rebuild around younger assets

The Charlotte Hornets are reportedly fielding aggressive trade offers for All-Star guard LaMelo Ball, with a potential transaction expected to materialise by the end of the week. According to reports from ESPN, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors have emerged as key interested parties in what appears to be a developing bidding war for the franchise’s marquee player.

The urgency of the situation follows the recent blockbuster movement of Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, which has significantly reinvigorated the NBA trade market. ESPN reporters Shams Charania, Marc Stein, Jake Fischer, and Chris Haynes have identified multiple teams actively pursuing Ball, suggesting that the Hornets may accept a deal they cannot refuse, despite the player’s expressed desire to remain in Charlotte.

Ball’s relationship with the franchise is described as being in a good place, and his on-court impact remains substantial. Last season, he averaged 20.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 72 regular-season games, while recording a career-low 2.8 turnovers per game. Data from Cleaning the Glass indicates the Hornets were 9.9 points per 100 possessions better with Ball on the court, and the team performed as one of the league’s best from January onwards.

However, the Hornets may be motivated to trade Ball to gain critical salary flexibility. Ball is owed more than $130 million over the next three years, and moving his contract could allow Charlotte to re-sign restricted free agent Brandon Miller and build their future around him and Kon Kneuppel. There is also speculation that Ball could be used as a piece in a multi-team deal potentially involving Jaylen Brown.

The market for ball-dominant, defensively deficient point guards has shifted significantly. Previously viewed as rapidly depreciating assets, such players are now considered viable if surrounded by sufficient defensive infrastructure, a trend highlighted by the New York Knicks’ championship contention and Jalen Brunson’s playoff performance. Ball’s 6-foot-8 frame provides size that may mitigate some traditional defensive concerns, though his scoring efficiency remains a point of scrutiny.
