Hntui brings Hacker News browsing to the terminal
The new interface supports keyboard and mouse navigation, saved stories and theme options, and draws data from the public Hacker News Firebase API.
Developer ahmd-sh has presented Hntui on Hacker News as a “Show HN”: a terminal interface for browsing the site. The project is designed for modern terminals with truecolour, mouse support and UTF-8.
Users can navigate with a keyboard or mouse, switch between dark and light themes, and save stories for later. Saved posts appear in a dedicated tab and persist between sessions in a local JSON file.
Hntui retrieves content through the public Hacker News Firebase API. It also checks for newer releases and displays a status-bar notice when an update is available.
The project offers dependency-free prebuilt binaries for Apple Silicon Macs and Linux on x64 and arm64. The developer says it has been tested in Ghostty on macOS; Linux and Windows support comes through OpenTUI, but has not been tested by the developer.
Installing through npm or working on the code requires Bun 1.2 or newer. The source does not establish how widely Hntui is being used.
