New Heisman platform gives first vote to fans
New initiative uses Carnegie Mellon analytics to weight daily ballots

The Heisman Trophy organisation has launched a new digital platform, Heisman Hopefuls, designed to allow college football fans to cast the first official votes for the annual award. Developed under the direction of CEO Jeff Price, the initiative aims to expand engagement with the trophy given to the most outstanding player in college football by integrating official player data and storytelling into the voting process.

The platform was created in collaboration with the Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Center (CMSAC), alongside Next League, Yangaroo, and CLC. Central to the launch is a website featuring player statistics and regularly updated EA Sports College Football player ratings. While this season’s data efforts are limited to basic player statistics rather than advanced analytics, the combination of data and ratings is intended to encourage voters to consider athletes across all positions.

Voting on the platform will be available daily throughout the season. The results will be dynamically weighted based on data observed by CMSAC, ensuring that the influence of fan votes shifts as the season progresses. Ron Yurko, director of the Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Center, stated that their data-driven approach will guide how much weight is assigned to votes each week.

The top three recipients of the fan vote will be recorded as the initial official Heisman ballot. This marks a structural shift in how the award’s early narrative is shaped, with the winner of the fan vote set to be unveiled live on ESPN during the weekend of conference championship games.

Last year’s fan vote was won by Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, with Nebraska’s Emmett Johnson finishing second and Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, the overall vote winner, taking third place. Price noted that the platform works in conjunction with schools to spotlight athletes and bring their stories forward all season long.
