Swedish aviation startup’s prototype reaches 1,100 feet in Upstate New York, drawing interest from major carriers

Heart Aerospace has confirmed the successful maiden flight of its X1 all-electric demonstrator aircraft, marking a pivotal moment in the development of sustainable regional aviation. The prototype departed from Plattsburgh International Airport in Upstate New York, remaining airborne for 27 minutes and reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet. According to the company, the entire flight, including takeoff and landing procedures, was powered solely by its battery systems and consumed less than $5 worth of electricity.

The flight demonstrates the potential for significantly lower operating costs compared to traditional aviation, a key value proposition for airlines seeking to reduce exposure to volatile fuel prices. Heart Aerospace noted that the efficiency of electric motors, combined with their inherent reliability and reduced maintenance requirements, could offer a compelling economic case for regional carriers. The company aims to eventually replace turboprop aircraft, such as the Embraer ERJ, with its electric solutions for short-hop routes.

Interest in the technology has already materialised from major industry players. Executives from United Airlines and Air Canada have expressed interest in incorporating electric aircraft into their fleets, recognising the strategic importance of decarbonising regional networks. This commercial interest underscores the growing appetite among legacy carriers for viable electric alternatives as regulatory and consumer pressure for greener travel intensifies.

Looking beyond the X1 demonstrator, Heart Aerospace is focused on the development of the ES-30, a fixed-wing, 30-seat hybrid-electric model. The company has set an ambitious target for the ES-30 to enter service by 2031. The initial configuration is designed for single-pilot operation, with the long-term vision including the potential for autonomous service. The hybrid variant is intended to extend operational range to 500 miles, compared to an all-electric range of 125 miles for the pure battery model.

The aviation sector is witnessing a surge in activity from startups aiming to redefine regional flight, with Heart Aerospace competing against firms such as Boom Supersonic, Harbour Air, ZeroAvia, and Rolls-Royce. However, the industry acknowledges that the commercial viability of electric flight remains heavily dependent on advancements in battery density and weight. While the X1 flight is a technical success, the path to widespread adoption will require sustained progress in energy storage technology to meet the rigorous demands of commercial aviation.
