Hayesville High School baseball advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs following a decisive 9-2 victory over Swain County on May 8. The result was driven largely by the dual-threat capabilities of senior Jackson Sellers, who contributed significantly both as a batter and a pitcher during the contest.
Sellers, a two-way star for the Yellow Jackets, initiated the offensive surge in the first inning by connecting on a three-run home run. This early momentum allowed the team to overcome a 3-2 deficit caused by defensive lapses, ultimately driving in five total runs while on the basepaths. The performance underscored Sellers' status as one of Western North Carolina's premier utility players, a distinction he has maintained through All-WNC honours in the last two seasons.
On the mound, Sellers delivered a dominant pitching performance that stifled the opposition. He struck out 11 batters while surrendering only two runs throughout the game. This outing added to his impressive season statistics, which include 85 strikeouts and 37 runs driven in across the campaign. The win against the No. 14 ranked Swain County team, who finished the regular season with a 10-10 record, marked the program's 16th consecutive victory.
The victory sets up a third-round matchup scheduled for May 12, where Hayesville will face the winner of a clash between No. 6 Cornerstone Charter and No. 11 Bishop McGuinness. This progression continues a strong regular season campaign in which Hayesville defeated Swain County twice, with scores of 16-1 and 10-0. The team's ability to rally and secure the win demonstrated a level of cohesion that head coach Joe Jack Sellers has noted is rare.
Coach Joe Jack Sellers, Jackson's father, praised his son's work ethic, describing him as the hardest-working player he has encountered. He noted that Jackson is able to set aside personal bias regarding his own son while maintaining high standards. The current squad, which includes players Jackson has known since childhood, possesses a strong chemistry that the coaching staff believes is essential for breaking the program's regional title drought.
Hayesville enters this playoff round with significant historical context, having won state championships in 1983 and 1988, as well as eight Western Regional titles. However, it has been nearly 40 years since the last regional crown. The current roster, led by Sellers, represents a core group that the administration and coaching staff feel is well-positioned to end that long wait for a regional title.
