Hayes names 26-player US squad for October friendlies with Spain

US women’s national team coach Emma Hayes has named a 26-player squad for October friendlies against Spain, bringing together Olympic gold medallists, NWSL players and new faces.
North Carolina Courage forward Ashley Sanchez returns after scoring 20 goals in the NWSL. Trinity Byars, Pietra Tordin and Evelyn Shores have received their first senior call-ups.
Mallory Swanson, who returned to action after maternity leave and a hip injury, is listed as a midfielder. Defender Naomi Girma is also named, but may withdraw after sustaining a knock in training, Hayes said.
Hayes said the camp would rebuild connections after a long break and give the team a chance to assess players who have not been involved this cycle. The friendlies will also form part of preparations for the Concacaf W Championship.
Forwards Jaedyn Shaw and Ally Sentnor will join the U-23 team during the international break. Hayes said the move was intended to prioritise their playing time and development amid competition for places in attack.
