Hawk Fire forces mass evacuations as blaze nears Reno

The Hawk Fire, a human-caused wildfire first reported on Saturday, has reached the outskirts of Reno, Nevada, prompting the evacuation of nearly 90,000 residents. As of Sunday evening, the blaze has consumed approximately 10,500 acres and remains 0 per cent contained, according to local officials. Windy and unpredictable weather conditions have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, which was first reported at 11:15 local time on Saturday.

Around 42,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes immediately, while a further 45,000 have been urged to prepare to evacuate. Local emergency services indicated that approximately 13,700 homes are located within the designated evacuation area. Two shelters have been established to accommodate displaced residents, though the exact number of homes destroyed or damaged has not yet been confirmed.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and deployed the National Guard to assist with firefighting and law enforcement efforts. The Nevada National Guard reported that 72 personnel, one Chinook, and one Black Hawk helicopter have joined the response. Lombardo described the situation as active and rapidly evolving, urging residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials.

Six people have been injured in the incident, including three emergency responders. All Washoe County schools are closed on Monday, with the exception of one institution, and mass road closures are in place across the region. The specific ignition source for the human-caused fire has not been detailed in initial reports.

Reno, located in western Nevada close to the California state boundary, has a population of around 280,000. The incident highlights the governance challenges posed by fast-moving wildfires in the region, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation as the fire remains uncontained.
