Harvey Grammar School football team resumes biennial US training tradition
The long-standing cultural exchange between the English school and New York students continues, with a focus on personal development alongside on-field preparation.
The Harvey Grammar School football team from Folkestone, England, has arrived in Chenango, New York, to continue a biennial tradition of visiting the Southern Tier region. The school has maintained this exchange with local communities every two years since 1989, utilising the trip for both athletic training and cultural immersion.
Upon arrival, the visiting squad joined students from Chenango Forks for a joint training session. The activity focused on scrimmages and drills, allowing the two groups to engage in competitive practice before the commencement of the local season.
Head Coach James Walton emphasised that the primary objective of the visit extends beyond football performance. The programme is designed to help players develop personal and interpersonal skills, particularly for those preparing to attend university in the following year.
A key component of the itinerary involves the players staying with host families from the Chenango Forks or Susquehanna Valley districts. Walton noted that this arrangement allows the students to immerse themselves in American culture and experience independent living, which he described as a significant part of the educational value of the tour.
The team is currently in its preseason phase, with the competitive season in England scheduled to begin in September. The visit serves as a preparatory period before they return to the UK.
A public match is scheduled for the following evening at 5:30 pm at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex. The event is open to the public, providing a final opportunity for local residents to engage with the visiting team before their departure.
