Harris County-Houston Sports Authority Joins Hockey Day in Houston for 2027
The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority has confirmed its role as a supporting partner for the 2027 Hockey Day in Houston, scheduled for March 20, as the event seeks to leverage its growing community footprint and fundraising success.
The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) has officially partnered with Hockey Day in Houston for its fourth annual iteration, scheduled to take place on March 20, 2027. The event, which will be held at Saint Arnold Brewing Company, represents a significant institutional alignment for a gathering that has previously generated over $110,000 for local hockey organisations and awarded 16 scholarships.
The HCHSA, an entity responsible for overseeing the city’s sports venues and managing stadium debt through hotel and rental car taxes, will provide supporting infrastructure for the 2027 gathering. Holly de Beer, the Chief Operating Officer of the HCHSA, stated that the authority views the event as a mechanism to strengthen community ties and expand opportunities for young athletes within the region.
Lance Rosenberg, co-chair of Hockey Day in Houston, described the initiative as a “Houston tradition” that has evolved from a “bold idea” in 2024 into a recurring fixture. Rosenberg noted that the event’s theme for 2027 will centre on honouring the city’s deep history with the sport and its pre-existing hockey organisations, reflecting how hockey has become a vital part of the city’s culture amid population growth.
Previous iterations of the event have demonstrated substantial community engagement, with over 16,000 attendees recorded in past years. Last year’s gathering raised more than $40,000, a figure that was matched by an additional $25,000 designated for academic scholarships and local hockey organisations. The 2027 event will feature NHL, WHA, and professional hockey alumni, continuing a format that has included booths from franchises such as the Dallas Stars in 2026.
Participating entities are expected to include a broad spectrum of local and collegiate groups, such as the Bulls, the University of Houston, Rice University, Houston Hellhouds Sled Hockey, the Houston Girls Hockey Association/HTX Storm, and the Women’s Hockey Outreach Association of Houston. The event is scheduled to commence at 11:00 a.m. CST, with the HCHSA’s involvement signalling a continued push to institutionalise the sport’s presence in the region.
