Hardaway urges Memphis Tigers to carry the city’s weight

Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway has framed the upcoming football season as a civic responsibility, urging players to view their performance as a direct contributor to the city’s social fabric. In a speech delivered to the squad and subsequently shared on social media, Hardaway argued that team success correlates with improved community morale, stating that when the Tigers win, "the crime goes down."

The intervention comes at a transitional moment for the football programme, which is fielding an entirely new coaching staff and a roster composed mostly of transfer players. Football head coach Charles Huff, who was appointed in December 2025, acknowledged the speech at a press conference on 25 August. While Huff maintained that on-field results remain paramount, he noted that Hardaway’s insights assist the new roster in understanding the significance of representing the Tigers.

Hardaway, a Memphis native who played for the university before his NBA career, leveraged his personal history to illustrate the depth of local support. He recalled being the No. 1 ranked high school player who chose to stay in Memphis not out of local loyalty, but because of how the fans treated him. He told the players that performing at a high level in the city results in being treated "like royalty," a dynamic he described as going deeper than ticket sales.

The speech emphasised the reciprocal nature of the relationship between the team and its supporters. Hardaway urged the players to push aside personal fatigue, noting that the effort required to compete is minor compared to the daily struggles of the fans who spend their money to watch them play. He stressed that this pride should resonate with the players regardless of their personal attachment to the city.

The Memphis football team opens its season against UNLV on 29 August. The basketball season, under Hardaway’s leadership, begins on 2 November against Iowa State.
