Harbaugh cautions Skattebo on celebrations as Giants running back returns to full drills
The rookie running back, recovering from ankle surgery sustained eight months ago, is expected to be available for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh has confirmed that running back Cam Skattebo fully participated in team drills during the second mandatory minicamp, which concluded on Wednesday, June 10. Harbaugh expressed satisfaction with Skattebo’s readiness, noting that the rookie had worked extensively to return to form following a significant injury.
The caution from the coaching staff specifically targeted Skattebo’s celebratory habits. Harbaugh issued a lighthearted but clear directive for the player to refrain from performing backflips, a reference to the running back’s previous on-field celebrations which included acrobatic moves and vocalisations reminiscent of professional wrestling. Harbaugh stated that he and Skattebo had "agreed" on this restriction during the camp.
Skattebo’s return marks a significant milestone in his recovery process. The former Arizona State star underwent surgery eight months prior to repair a dislocated ankle sustained during a Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Prior to the injury, he had established himself as a key contributor, serving as the team’s primary running back in five of his eight games played and leading the Giants in rushing yards and touchdowns.
Harbaugh highlighted the intensity of Skattebo’s rehabilitation efforts. Speaking on June 8, the coach noted that he was informed by both the player and the training staff that Skattebo would be involved in group and team plays. "He's worked super hard, super hard," Harbaugh said, adding that seeing the player participate in team drills was exactly where the coaching staff wanted him to be at this stage of preparation.
The running back is now expected to be available for the Giants’ Week 1 home matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Skattebo, who played alongside starting quarterback Jaxson Dart last season, appears poised to resume his role in the offensive backfield as the team prepares for the regular season.
