Harbaugh begins Giants tenure with 28-20 win over Cowboys
New York controlled the ground game and the final 5:16 to secure John Harbaugh’s first victory as Giants head coach.
John Harbaugh’s tenure as New York Giants head coach began with a 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium, giving the club its second season-opening win in 10 seasons.
The Giants established the physical style Harbaugh had outlined on his arrival, outrushing Dallas 165-69. Running back Cam Skattebo led New York with 81 rushing yards as the team combined its ground game with play-action passing.
New York also managed the game’s closing stages, controlling the final 5:16 while withstanding late pressure from Dallas. The result ended a difficult stretch against the Cowboys, who had won 16 of the teams’ previous 18 meetings.
Harbaugh, who spent 18 seasons coaching the Baltimore Ravens and won a Super Bowl, called the victory his “No. 1” win among his 205 career victories because it was his most recent.
Team owner John Mara presented Harbaugh with the game ball after the match, while Giants players celebrated their new coach’s first victory with the organisation.
