Haaland sends Manchester City top after narrow Coventry win
Manchester City preserved their winning start with a 1–0 victory, but needed late saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma to hold off newly promoted Coventry City.
Erling Haaland’s second-half header gave Manchester City a 1–0 win over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium and moved the club to the top of the Premier League at the time of reporting.
Haaland scored midway through the first half for his third goal in three matches. His finish followed a cross from Antoine Semenyo, after Enzo Fernández’s pass released the winger down the right.
City did not turn the lead into a comfortable result. Coventry, who have returned to the top flight after 25 years, threatened before and after the goal, with Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni missing opportunities to score.
Donnarumma then made two late saves to deny Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms an equaliser. Coventry have now lost their previous three matches without scoring, although the performance offered encouragement that they can compete in the top flight.
Enzo Maresca handed debuts to Iliman Ndiaye and Fernández, who started after Nico O’Reilly was injured during the warm-up. The club’s reported £460 million transfer spending was described as a record outlay by any club, though that figure has not been independently verified here.
City remain ahead of Arsenal pending the champions’ match against Chelsea. Their next fixture is against local rivals Manchester United next weekend.
