Erling Haaland gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford despite City playing with 10 men for most of the match.
Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes. Referee Michael Oliver showed a straight red card, and VAR upheld the decision, which remained a subject of debate after the match.
United were unable to turn their numerical advantage into a goal. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both struck the woodwork, while City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a late save from Bryan Mbeumo to preserve the result.
Haaland scored in the 60th minute after turning in Josko Gvardiol’s cross at the far post. The goal was initially ruled offside before VAR overturned the call.
The Premier League Match Centre said Haaland was onside and that Fernandes, while in an offside position, had not played the ball. The decision prompted confusion and disagreement, with ESPN identifying both the goal and Foden’s dismissal as the main post-match talking points.
The result was City’s victory in the 199th meeting between the clubs. Haaland’s goal was reported as his ninth in Premier League Manchester derbies, making him the fixture’s leading scorer, while United were left with four points from their opening four league matches.
