Haaland double gives Maresca first Champions League win at Manchester City
Manchester City defeated Porto 2-0 in Portugal, but Sky Sports reported an unconvincing performance ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat FC Porto 2-0 away in Enzo Maresca’s first Champions League match as the club’s head coach.
Haaland opened the scoring two minutes after half-time, heading in off the post from Enzo Fernandez’s cross. He added a second in stoppage time after Rayan Ait-Nouri reached the byline and cut the ball back.
The result took Haaland to 36 Champions League goals for Manchester City, equalling Sergio Agüero’s club record in the competition. City also became the first team to beat Porto at the Estádio do Dragão in 2026.
Porto failed to record a shot on target, although Sky Sports reported that City allowed the hosts back into the match after half-time. Alan Varela curled an effort just wide, while City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was nearly caught in possession.
Haaland had missed several first-half chances, with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa saving two efforts and denying Rayan Cherki from the rebound of one of them. Despite the victory, Sky Sports described City’s performance as unconvincing.
The win comes before Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, where City will face another test of Maresca’s side.
