Suspect Cole Tomas Allen apprehended after attempting to target Secret Service agent with shotgun; event rescheduled for 30 days

A gunman attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents' Dinner held at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, DC, firing shots and targeting a Secret Service agent. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, was apprehended after the incident. US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and cabinet members were unharmed but were rushed to safety by Secret Service agents.

The event was interrupted by gunfire shortly after the welcoming speech, prompting an emergency evacuation of the head table. A man armed with a shotgun fired at a Secret Service agent who was protected by a bulletproof vest. Although the agent was hit, the protective gear ensured he remained unharmed. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that charges are expected to be filed shortly regarding the shooting, firearm possession, and other related conduct.

The suspect appeared to be acting alone and was heavily armed. Upon capture, police stripped the suspect to ensure no explosive devices were present. The White House Correspondents' Association dinner has been rescheduled for approximately 30 days. President Trump confirmed the suspect was heavily armed and noted the Secret Service agent was in great shape and in high spirits following the incident.

The Washington Hilton holds historical significance for security incidents, notably the 1981 attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. This location has previously been the site of multiple assassination attempts against President Trump, including the July 2024 attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, and a September 2024 plot involving Ryan Routh near his golf course in Florida.

President Trump lauded the bravery of the Secret Service agent who was shot from a very close distance with a powerful gun. He stated that the agent is in very high spirits and that the law enforcement response was incredible. The President affirmed that the administration would not let anyone take over society or cancel such events, despite the trauma experienced by the First Lady and the disruption to the gala.
