IPL 2026 Playoffs: CSK eliminated in franchise-worst defeat

Chennai Super Kings have been eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoffs following a record-breaking 89-run defeat to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The result marks the largest margin of victory in Gujarat Titans’ franchise history and the heaviest loss in Chennai Super Kings’ 15-year tournament record, surpassing their previous worst defeat of 60 runs against Mumbai Indians in 2013.

Gujarat Titans, led by captain Shubman Gill’s 64 off 37 balls, posted a formidable total of 229/4. Gill struck seven fours and three sixes before Sai Sudharsan contributed 84 off 53 balls. The opening partnership of 125 runs accelerated the scoring rate, allowing Jos Buttler to finish unbeaten on 57 off 27 balls after Gill’s dismissal. The innings demonstrated a dominant batting performance that left the Chennai Super Kings chase insurmountable.

In response, Chennai Super Kings collapsed under pressure, bowled out for 140 in just 14 overs. Mohammed Siraj was the standout bowler for Gujarat Titans, claiming 3/26 in a devastating opening spell. Siraj dismissed Sanju Samson for a first-ball duck and quickly removed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Urvil Patel to leave the visitors reeling at 29/3. Kagiso Rabada added to the damage by dismissing Matthew Short, while Rashid Khan cleaned up the lower order.

Shivam Dube was the only Chennai Super Kings batsman to offer significant resistance, scoring a quickfire 47 off 17 balls. However, the early loss of wickets prevented any substantial recovery. Siraj noted that his priority during the powerplay was to build pressure, a strategy that effectively dismantled the Chennai Super Kings’ top order and sealed the match.

The victory consolidates Gujarat Titans’ second spot in the points table with 18 points from 14 games. They trail table-toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who also hold 18 points but maintain a superior net run rate and have a game in hand. Gujarat Titans enter the playoffs with momentum, while Chennai Super Kings’ campaign ends in their most disappointing finish to date.
