'Our bus was going up in smoke': Jos Buttler reveals scary incident after Gujarat Titans' IPL 2026 final loss to RCB
Jos Buttler describes 'frightening' incident as team evacuates vehicle in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Titans wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has disclosed a safety incident involving the team bus following the franchise’s defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2026 final. The event occurred on the return journey to the team hotel in Ahmedabad on the night of May 31, 2026, at approximately 02:00 local time. A short circuit caused smoke to fill the vehicle, forcing players and support staff to evacuate and wait by the roadside until an alternative bus was arranged. All personnel were reported safe and unharmed.

Buttler described the occurrence as a “frightening safety scare” that compounded the disappointment of the final loss, noting that the team’s night was “summed up” by the incident. Players at the rear of the bus began smelling smoke before the evacuation was ordered. The captain contrasted the Titans’ situation with the celebrations of the victorious Royal Challengers Bengaluru, stating, “I'm sure the RCB party was in full flow. Our bus was going up in smoke along with our not what you need. Our dreams of winning the title.”

The Gujarat Titans lost the title match by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully chasing down the target to retain the trophy. The Titans, who finished second on the points table, had reached the final by defeating Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in Qualifier 2, after losing Qualifier 1 to RCB. This marked the franchise’s third IPL final in five seasons, having previously won the title in 2022.

Following the defeat, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill admitted his side failed to post a competitive total in the summit clash. Gill noted that early wickets in the powerplay disrupted the team’s momentum. “If we'd have gotten 180-190, it'd have been a good match. Maybe a little two-paced but not too much. There's some early movement for pacers. We lost early wickets and never got momentum,” Gill said, adding that the team felt they could have remained in the game had they taken one or two wickets in the initial overs.

The incident has added a bizarre and unsettling end to the Titans’ campaign. While the squad and support staff were unharmed, the mechanical failure on the return journey from the stadium has been highlighted by Buttler as a stark contrast to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the winning team. The event underscores the logistical and safety challenges faced by touring teams, even in the context of a major sporting final.
