Guadalajara wildfire forces evacuations as Spain contends with triple blaze crisis
Local officials report no casualties from the Guadalajara blaze, which threatens the Sierra Norte Natural Park, while separate fires in the south and northeast continue to challenge emergency services across the country.

A wildfire in Guadalajara province, located approximately 100 kilometres north of Madrid, has burned more than 12,000 hectares and necessitated the evacuation of several hundred residents. Local authorities confirmed the scale of the blaze on Sunday, noting that the fire, which ignited on Thursday in a forested, mountainous region, has caused no casualties but remains difficult to contain.
Regional President Emiliano Garcia-Page and local officials described the situation as challenging on social media platform X. The affected area encompasses the Sierra Norte Natural Park, a habitat for endangered species including eagles, wolves, and butterflies. The ecological impact on these populations has not yet been quantified, though the immediate threat to the protected landscape is significant.
This incident occurs as Spain manages two other major fire emergencies simultaneously. In the northeast, a separate blaze near Zaragoza began on Wednesday and has burned nearly 16,000 hectares. The regional government of Aragon stated on Saturday evening that this fire remains far from under control.
Earlier this month, the country suffered one of its deadliest recent wildfires in the southern province of Almeria. That blaze resulted in 13 fatalities and destroyed 7,000 hectares, marking a tragic precedent for the current emergency response efforts.
Spain is currently experiencing increasingly long and frequent heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 40C. Scientists attribute the increased length, intensity, and frequency of these heatwaves to human-driven climate change, which dries out vegetation and elevates the likelihood of devastating fires. The current conditions in Guadalajara, Almeria, and Zaragoza reflect the broader climatic pressures facing the region.
