Gstaad secures O’Brien’s twelfth Irish 2,000 Guineas triumph at Curragh

Gstaad has claimed victory in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh, delivering a decisive performance that underscores the continued dominance of trainer Aidan O’Brien in the event. The win marks O’Brien’s twelfth triumph in the prestigious race, reinforcing the stability and success of his operation within the sport’s elite tier.

Ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, the 4-11 favourite demonstrated tactical control from the outset. Gstaad took the lead from early front-runners Alparslan and Power Blue as the field entered the final quarter mile, maintaining a composed pace that allowed the horse to utilise its physical attributes effectively.

The margin of victory was three lengths, with Gstaad finishing ahead of Distant Storm in second place and Pacific Avenue in third. The performance served as a strong rebuttal to previous setbacks, particularly after the horse finished second in a prior contest at Newmarket.

Moore, who drew position eight, described the horse’s run as uncomplicated, noting that Gstaad was comfortable on the wing and unaffected by the pressure of the field. He highlighted the horse’s "extravagant stride," which proved decisive when the race opened up in the closing stages.

Reflecting on the horse’s recent form, Moore observed that Gstaad had "been second a few times and has never run a bad race," suggesting that previous outcomes were influenced by external circumstances rather than performance deficits. He characterised the horse as a "big, scopey" animal with the potential to progress further in future campaigns.
