Groin surgery delays Sam Curran’s England Test return
Surrey all-rounder ruled out for remainder of home season; Will Jacks monitored for Sri Lanka white-ball series.
England all-rounder Sam Curran will undergo groin surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the home cricket season. The operation is scheduled for Friday, following the conclusion of The Hundred, and delays his anticipated return to the Test format.
Curran was expected to join the England squad for the ongoing series against Pakistan. His inclusion would have marked his first Test appearance since 2021, a gap of five years in the format.
A statement from Surrey confirmed the medical decision. "Sam Curran has been assessed for a groin injury and will undergo surgery on Friday. He will not be available for the remainder of the home season," the club said.
The injury affects England's plans for the current Test series, with day two of the first match against Pakistan underway at Headingley. Joe Root has returned as England captain for this series, which continues with matches scheduled at Lord’s and Edgbaston in August and September.
Surrey teammate Will Jacks has also been ruled out of the Pakistan Test series after undergoing an operation to remove his appendix. The club stated that Jacks is currently recovering from the successful procedure.
Surrey will monitor Jacks’ recovery and assess his availability ahead of the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. His participation in that series is not yet confirmed, with the club indicating he is in contention subject to his fitness.
