Sonny Gray said he was frustrated after Red Sox manager Chad Tracy removed him in the fifth inning of Boston’s 9–2 loss to the New York Yankees. The defeat completed a two-game Wild Card Series sweep and eliminated Boston.

The Red Sox trailed 1–0 when Gray allowed a two-out single that put runners at the corners. He had thrown 70 pitches. Gray said he felt sharp and was executing his plan, and that he wanted to be trusted to continue.

The Yankees outscored Boston 18–2 across the series. The Red Sox’ exit followed a 9–0 loss in the opening game, when Tracy also removed starter Payton Tolle before the fifth inning was complete.

Tracy took over as manager after Alex Cora was fired in April, according to Fox Sports. Boston also lost its Wild Card Series to the Yankees last season.
