Google tests Flipkart checkout in Gemini and AI Mode in India
A limited trial lets some Indian users open Flipkart checkout from selected product listings. A wider rollout is planned for October, according to TechCrunch sources.

Google is testing a way for some users in India to buy selected Flipkart products through Gemini and AI Mode, moving its AI shopping tools from product discovery towards checkout.
A “Buy” button on some listings opens a Flipkart-branded checkout within the AI interface. The trial covers a small selection, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Other users continue to see product listings without the purchase option.
TechCrunch reported the test and, citing people familiar with it, said Google plans a broader rollout later in October. The timing and scope have not been confirmed. Google told TechCrunch it regularly tests features to help people discover and connect with businesses, but provided no further details.
The checkout differs from a Google-hosted experience the company previously demonstrated for purchases through its AI services. Google has not disclosed what technology powers the Flipkart trial, so the available information does not establish whether it uses the Universal Commerce Protocol.
Google named Flipkart among merchants partnering on “agentic” shopping in India earlier in September. The companies also have a financial relationship: Google invested about US$350 million in Flipkart in 2024 for a minority stake.
In the experience TechCrunch saw, listings from other retailers, including Amazon, had no direct purchase option. Flipkart had not responded to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
