Golden Knights sweep Avalanche to reach Stanley Cup Final
Vegas defeats Presidents’ Trophy winners Colorado 2-1 in Game 4, setting up final against Carolina or Montreal

The Vegas Golden Knights have advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in franchise history, completing a sweep of the Western Conference Final against the Colorado Avalanche. The victory was secured on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win in Game 4, eliminating the league’s top seed and Presidents’ Trophy champions.
Cole Smith scored the decisive goal 14 minutes and 15 seconds into the third period, while captain Mark Stone also found the net for Vegas. Colorado narrowed the margin in the final period through Gabriel Landeskog’s sixth postseason goal, but the Golden Knights held firm to complete the series sweep.
Head coach John Tortorella framed the upcoming championship series as the true beginning of the playoffs for his team. Speaking to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan on the ice after the match, Tortorella stated that he considers the first three rounds preliminary, noting that the "real stuff" begins now as the team competes for the Stanley Cup.
The triumph marks a significant turnaround for the franchise, which faced the possibility of missing the playoffs for only the second time in its history. Management dismissed head coach Bruce Cassidy, who had led the club to the 2023 Stanley Cup title, with eight games remaining in the regular season. Tortorella replaced Cassidy and guided Vegas to a 7-0-1 record to close the regular season, following series victories over Utah and Anaheim.
Tortorella credited the team’s success to its internal cohesion rather than individual star power. "There's no one particular person that carries the weight," he said, describing the squad as a "group situation" that has maintained its camaraderie through the ebbs and flows of the season.
Vegas will now await the winner of the Eastern Conference Final to determine their opponent in the Stanley Cup Final. The Golden Knights are set to face either the Carolina Hurricanes or the Montreal Canadiens. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
