Glenn Phillips rejects 'silly' narrative after Gujarat Titans' playoff exit
Glenn Phillips has firmly rebuked post-match speculation regarding the mental state of the Gujarat Titans squad, insisting that professional cricketers do not quit, following the team’s elimination from IPL 2026.

Gujarat Titans batter Glenn Phillips has issued a sharp rebuke to media speculation regarding the team’s mental resilience, following the side’s 92-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1. The confrontation occurred during the post-match press conference in New Delhi on May 27, 2026, after a reporter suggested the Titans had mentally surrendered while chasing a target of 254.
Phillips, who was not included in the playing XI for the qualifier, attended the media session and strongly contested the premise of the question. He described the suggestion that the team had given up as "silly" and "terrible," emphasising that professional athletes do not enter high-stakes matches with the intention of quitting. "No one goes in there waiting to go, 'Oh, you know what? We're just going to give up on this one,'" Phillips stated, asserting that the squad had given everything on the field despite the outcome.
The match, held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru post a formidable total of 254/5. The innings was anchored by Rajat Patidar’s unbeaten 93 off 33 balls, supported by contributions of 43 runs each from Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya. In response, Gujarat Titans’ top order collapsed early, with key batsmen Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler departing for low scores, leaving the team bowled out for 162.
Addressing the mechanics of the loss, Phillips acknowledged that the sheer magnitude of the target created significant scoreboard pressure. He noted that chasing 250 runs is a rare feat in the tournament, where every minor error becomes costly under such conditions. While admitting that the pressure contributed to the top-order collapse, he maintained that the team’s effort was genuine and that the outcome was a result of execution rather than intent.
Looking ahead, Phillips urged the squad to maintain composure as they prepare for the upcoming Eliminator. He stressed the need for the team to remain calm and focused, recognising that the pressure of high-voltage cricket requires resilience. The defeat marks a setback for Gujarat Titans, who had previously demonstrated their chasing capabilities with a victory against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad earlier in the season.
