Gibbs scores three as Lions overcome Jets’ limits on big plays
Detroit beat New York 31-24 after a late 49-yard pass from Jared Goff set up Jahmyr Gibbs’ go-ahead touchdown.
The Detroit Lions beat the New York Jets 31-24, with Jahmyr Gibbs scoring three touchdowns in a game where New York restricted Detroit’s big plays for much of the contest.
Gibbs finished with 164 yards on 27 touches, but his longest play was 17 yards. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams combined for 68 yards on eight catches, with four yards after the catch. Sam LaPorta caught three passes for 44 yards.
Detroit kept moving the ball through efficient passing and running: Goff completed 78.1 per cent of his passes and the Lions averaged 4.8 yards per carry. Coach Dan Campbell credited Goff’s decision-making and the offensive line’s protection.
After New York levelled the score at 24 with 4:11 remaining, Goff connected with Isaac TeSlaa for 49 yards on the next play, reaching the Jets’ 16-yard line. Gibbs caught an 11-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:30 left.
The Jets had a final opportunity, reaching Detroit’s 28, before a safety blitz by Chuck Clark forced a fumble. Jack Campbell recovered and returned the ball to the Lions’ 45, and Goff ran out the clock.
Yahoo Sports’ Associated Press report noted that Jets coach Aaron Glenn had been Detroit’s defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2024. Campbell praised Glenn’s defensive performance against the Lions’ offence.
