The San Francisco Giants have been mathematically eliminated from 2026 postseason contention after Arizona defeated Kansas City, according to Yahoo Sports. They are the third team eliminated, joining the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels.
The result ends a season that began with San Francisco seeking to move beyond four consecutive campaigns at or near .500 and establish itself among the National League contenders. Instead, Yahoo Sports reported that the Giants have fallen closer in the standings to the Rockies than to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With less than three weeks remaining, San Francisco is on pace for the franchise’s worst record since 2017. That remains a projection, rather than a confirmed final record.
The setback follows an ambitious roster-building programme overseen by president Buster Posey. The organisation secured long-term deals for Matt Chapman and Willy Adames, then acquired Rafael Devers from Boston during the 2025 season.
San Francisco finished 81–81 in 2025 and replaced manager Bob Melvin with Tony Vitello, whose previous managerial experience was at the University of Tennessee rather than in professional baseball. The 2026 roster also added Tyler Mahle, Adrian Houser, Luis Arraez and Harrison Bader.
